Lab Philosophy and Culture

đź’ˇ
“Science is more than generating data—it’s about asking questions that matter, building a supportive community, and growing together as researchers and human beings. The Kaur Lab is created as a space where people can thrive, innovate, and push boundaries. I'm committed to helping every lab member build a meaningful and fulfilling scientific career.”
The Kaur Lab is driven by a deep curiosity to understand how microbial symbionts shape host biology, reproduction, and evolution. Our mission is to conduct rigorous, creative, and impactful science that advances both fundamental biology and translational applications in vector-borne disease control. We believe that groundbreaking discoveries emerge from a culture of collaboration, integrity, and inclusion.

Core Values

  • Scientific Rigor and Innovation
We strive for excellence in our science. Our experiments are thoughtfully designed, carefully executed, and interpreted with humility and honesty. We value bold ideas and embrace interdisciplinary approaches—combining molecular genetics, symbiosis, epigenetics, and synthetic biology to tackle complex biological questions.
  • Collaboration Over Competition
Science is a team effort. We foster a cooperative, non-hierarchical environment where all members—from undergraduates to postdocs—are empowered to contribute ideas, ask questions, and share credit.
  • Mentorship and Growth
We are committed to cultivating the next generation of scientists. Lab members receive tailored mentorship, regular feedback, and opportunities to develop technical, critical thinking, and communication skills. Your success—whether in academia, industry, or beyond—is a core goal of the lab.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
We actively work to build a lab community that is inclusive of all backgrounds, identities, and perspectives. We believe that diversity strengthens our science and are committed to promoting equity and psychological safety in our research space.
  • Work-Life Balance and Wellbeing
We support healthy boundaries, flexible schedules, and time away from the bench to recharge. We celebrate both professional and personal milestones, and understand that thriving scientists are also whole people with lives beyond the lab.

Expectations

In the Kaur Lab, we commit to:
  • Practicing open communication and respect at all times.
  • Supporting each other’s growth through collaboration and constructive feedback.
  • Taking ownership of our projects while contributing to the collective success of the lab.
  • Upholding the highest standards of ethics in research, authorship, and data integrity.
  • Engaging in outreach, teaching, and broader scientific conversations when possible.
